ADELAIDE GETS STRATEGIC
The success of Corus Adelaide’s monthly HR Breakfast Seminar series encouraged the team to establish a new group aimed at HR directors. The Strategic HR Forum group meets six times a year and is run in conjunction with Mercer.
“The Forum is a great business development tool for strengthening existing client relationships and building networks with new clients,” says Corus’ Helen Wearing-Smith.
“We wanted the group to have a community focus, so we’ve been sponsoring Chloe, the sister of our Corus guide dog Campbell. Each meeting features an update on Chloe’s progress.”
Corus also recently held a one-day seminar on Peak Performance for HR professionals, managers and line managers. HR Consultant, Veronica Lee, guided the 20 participants through setting KPIs based on job descriptions for both current and new employees.

Your best career advice?
Follow your dreams, and don’t be afraid to try something different. I moved from administration to recruitment. I was hesitant at first, but have realised that I have found the perfect job.
A career highlight?
I started work at 15, and after 15 years, the change to recruitment has been the highlight. I really enjoy helping people find the next stage in their careers.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy the relationships with my clients. My unique and intimate relationships allow me to move beyond the job description and find exactly the employee my clients are looking for.
Most challenging placement?
Finding skilled people in Western Australia that aren’t already in jobs they enjoy. For example, I am currently searching for a geologist, which is very difficult with the resources sector boom.
Who has inspired you most at work?
Phillip DeRonchi, my former branch manager, and Frank Morgante, the Trojan Recruitment Group General Manager, Southern Region. Frank is always available and is a constant support to me. Frank has really helped me make my dreams and aspirations a reality.
