THE MD

As a business and as individuals, the Trojan Recruitment Group is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace for all employees, contractors and visitors. Effective occupational health and safety (OH&S) practices are a cornerstone of our People Really Matter core value.

Winning WorkCover SA’s Excellence Award in Recovery and Return to work was a fantastic achievement, especially for a labour hire business. But we can still improve. We recently held a National OH&S Workshop, where our current practices were reviewed. Through a formal review of incidents over the past year in the field staff recruitment area, we identified some areas for improvement in our recruitment practices.

As a business, we are committed to ensuring we do everything we can to minimise and prevent injury in the workplace. The Trojan Recruitment Group has a safety management system, which is based on the systematic identification, assessment and control of hazards and which complies will all legislation, codes and guidelines. We have supplemented this with a recruitment practices guide to provide specific direction to ensure consultants can provide the right person for the right job.

Branch managers will be discussing OH&S practices at team meetings and sharing other recommendations from the workshop. As Managing Director, I am ultimately responsible for the safety of our workplace and so compliance with our recruitment practices guide will be audited monthly and reported to me.

Whether you are a candidate or client, if you ever have any workplace safety concern please contact your Trojan Workforce or Corus People Solutions branch immediately. By working together we can reduce accidents and incidents and ensure everyone’s safety at work.

HUMOUR LIFTS JOB SATISFACTION

Having a good laugh at work increases job satisfaction, according to research from Swinburne University of Technology in Victoria.

The study of 300 employees across 20 countries found that individual personality and mood were major drivers of job satisfaction – combined with humour, these factors explained more than 40 per cent of workers’ job satisfaction. Employees who worked in environments with negative or no humour experienced lower levels of job satisfaction.

CLIENT SHOWCASE

Messenger Community News

With 11 newspaper titles across metropolitan Adelaide, 12 websites and a weekly readership of more than 690,000, Messenger Community News is a significant South Australian media organisation. The company has an annual turnover of $40 million, employs 190 staff and distributes 537,000 free newspapers each week in addition to the monthly Adelaide Matters lifestyle magazine.

For Messenger’s General Manager, John Turner, the biggest business challenge is maintaining the company’s market share.

“We are constantly fighting against television and radio, plus smaller niche publications that would like to poach our clients,” John explains.

For this reason, it is essential that Messenger has a team of dedicated, confident and enthusiastic sales staff.

“We are in the business of selling advertising space – that’s how we make our revenue,” John says.

With a human resources team consisting of one manager, Messenger partners with Corus People Solutions for temporary and permanent recruitment. During the past four years, Corus has recruited a large number of staff, including receptionists, personal assistants and sales representatives. Corus is currently interviewing for a category manager position.

John says time is the main reason he outsources recruitment. “Corus sifts through the candidates and recommends the top three or four, who we interview,” he says. “With so many applications, time is an issue, and so we are prepared to pay for the very good service Corus provides.”

It is essential that a recruitment agency knows the Messenger business and the type of sales people and staff needed to support it. John says Corus really understands this.

“Even though they are part of News Limited, the business has a family feeling, very much like our own,” says Corus’ Susan Manuel. “We understand Messenger’s needs and the type of people who will fit into their unique culture. We understand the values of their staff – we all work very hard but also have fun along the way.”
